Discovery Primary Schools builds future leaders through sport

The Discovery Soccer Programme is shaping young athletes and instilling valuable life skills through competition and focusing on developing future leaders.

Now in its 16th year, on June 25, the Discovery Johannesburg Primary Schools Soccer Programme continues to serve as a vital platform for promoting healthy living and community engagement among young athletes.

As the youngsters prepared to kick off the 2025 series, it was important for Discovery to reflect on why sports are such a unifying force in South Africa, especially at the grassroots level.

Through the programme, Discovery aims to help boys and girls become better versions of themselves, building the foundation for their future and the future of their country.

The tournament featured 18 primary schools battling it out to be crowned champions in their divisions.

Phumele Kubeka, the marketing manager for sponsorships and experiential marketing at Discovery, emphasised the importance of investing in youth during this month dedicated to celebrating young people.
“At Discovery, our core purpose is to make people healthier and protect their lives. This tournament aligns with our mission by instilling healthy habits from an early age,” Kubeka said. She highlighted the significance of developing a competitive spirit, teaching children how to win and lose gracefully, and fostering essential soft skills such as teamwork and leadership.

  • U10 Boys: Heron Bridge
  • U11 Boys: King David Linksfield
  • U12 Boys: King David Linksfield
  • U13 Boys: ESCA Wanderers
  • U14 Boys: King’s College Linbro Park

Girls:

  • U9 Girls: Cliffview
  • U11 Girls: Yeshiva
  • U14 Girls: Crawford Lonehill.
