Tragic accidents highlight urgent need for road safety on West Park Road

As fatal accidents continue to occur, security officials are calling for action against reckless driving that threatens their safety.

SCP Security has voiced serious safety concerns for motorists following a recent accident on the morning of July 28 involving a scholar transport vehicle. The vehicle was reportedly travelling at high speed when the driver lost control, causing it to overturn on the bend near West Park Cemetery.

Jaun van der Westhuizen, manager at SCP, said the community is increasingly alarmed by motorists speeding through the area. He stressed the urgent need to address the reckless driving that has become all too common on this stretch of road.

“It’s a serious issue that we can’t ignore,” he stated, recalling a previous incident where SCP Private Fire Search and Rescue and City of Johannesburg emergency services were called to extricate a deceased motorist from a vehicle in an accident on July 4.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla addressed the wider issue of reckless driving, noting that it remains a major contributor to road fatalities and injuries across Johannesburg.

According to Fihla, human factors were responsible for 87% of crashes during the 2024/2025 festive season in South Africa.

“Common offences include excessive speeding, drunk driving, disregarding traffic signals, reckless overtaking, ignoring road markings, dangerous weaving, and distracted driving,” added Fihla.

To combat these behaviours, Fihla said the JMPD employs a combination of proactive strategies, including visible policing, roadblocks, speed cameras, and targeted awareness campaigns.
He underscored the effectiveness of these measures:

“Speed cameras and roadblocks have proven effective in deterring reckless driving, leading to increased fines and arrests, including tens of thousands for drunk driving. Additionally, these efforts provide valuable data for future road safety planning.”
