Roosevelt High learners lead powerful week of activities for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The five-day campaign saw the school unite in donations and support for a great cause.
Roosevelt High School stood proudly in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, turning an entire week into a celebration of love, strength and solidarity for all the brave women fighting this battle. From October 13 to 17, the school hosted a series of fun but deeply meaningful themed days encouraging learners to participate, donate and spread the message far and wide — all dressed in pink.
As part of her portfolio project in the Johannesburg Junior Council, the initiative was driven by Grade 11 learner Boikhanyo Maphopa. Working closely with teacher Lizette Holl, they spent days planning and preparing in the classroom before launching the project the moment school resumed after the holiday. “We’ve pulled together like we’ve never pulled together before,” said Holl, a breast cancer survivor herself. “We did not have to beg anyone — everyone just showed up and supported. This is what family means. The love, empathy and commitment.”

Each day carried its own theme and donation focus:
- Mammogram Monday (October 13): Learners dressed in pyjamas, gowns and slippers – donations included sanitary pads or tampons
- Tutu Tuesday (October 14): Learners arrived in colourful tutus and brought along tissues and wet wipes.
- Wellness Wednesday (October 15): Soap and lotions were donated to support women receiving treatment.
- Thriving Thursday (October 16): Books were collected to donate to a non-profit for patients in treatment.
- Pay It Forward in Pink Friday and Bake Sale (October 17): More than 70 teachers joined forces to bake, sell and cycle for the cause, raising R12 000.
Holl highlighted that the response from learners, staff and families exceeded every expectation. All proceeds raised during that week will be donated to Cansa Breast Cancer Awareness, ensuring the impact of Roosevelt’s pink campaign reaches far beyond the school grounds.
