Young public speakers take the stand
Hosted by Northcliff Rotary Club young public speakers recently had their voices heard at a public speaking competition.
The Northcliff Rotary Club, together with Trinity House Randpark Ridge Preparatory School, recently hosted the club’s annual Public Speaking competition.
The event which was hosted at the school, was open to Grade 7s from both public and private primary schools. Nine schools participated in this year’s contest: Constantia Kloof, Crawford Ruimsig, Montrose Primary, Franklin D Roosevelt, Northcliff Primary, Bryanston Primary, The King’s College and Preparatory School Bryanston, Pridwin Preparatory School and hosts, Trinity House Rand Park Ridge.
On the day Trinity House’s principal, Hilton Scott, welcomed the speakers, parents and educators.
Club president Godfrey Adjusi explained the club has been hosting this annual event for the past 40 years which had now become a highlight on the primary school calendar over the years. “This is indeed a milestone in the club’s history that a project that encourages youth development has been going on for this number of years, with the exception being during 2020 when the hard lockdown was imposed.”

The winner of the prepared speech category was Ivania Dos Santos of Trinity House Prep and the runner-up was Stasi Rankin of Bryanston-based The King’s College and Preparatory School.
The impromptu category was won by I-Shen Cheng of Montrose Primary School and the runner-up was Callan Macintyre from King’s College and Preparatory.
The winning school on the night was The Kings College and Preparatory School. Congratulations went to the English head, Adele Greasley, as well as to the public speakers, Ivania Dos Santos and I-Shen Cheng.

Chief adjudicator Brian Appleton from the National Eisteddfod Academy was said to have been extremely impressed with the high standard which continues beyond his expectations as all schools and participants scored over 90%. “As the impact of Covid-19 has mostly passed, we would encourage more schools to participate in this prestigious competition.”
Adjusi distributed certificates and book prizes to the speakers. He also awarded a framed plaque to Scott as winners of the competition.
