Jabulile Hadebe is an asset to City Power who works in and around Melville

The young mother loves her job and is grateful for having the opportunity to work in her chosen field as an electrical engineer.

Jabulile Hadebe (23) has worked with City Power for almost two years after graduating with a degree in electrical engineering.

She lives in Diepkloof, Soweto with her mother, sister and young son who is looked after by a helper while she is away from home for over 13 hours a day.

She wakes at 4am for her shift and often only returns home after 6:30pm when she then focuses her attention on tasks like preparing a meal and getting her boy ready for bed.

“I love my job because it is really challenging. We need to figure out what each problem is when we are on a job and it is not always obvious, so I am always stimulated and on alert. If plan A has not worked, we need to brainstorm another solution, and quickly because our customers need power for everything they do.”

When asked what her biggest frustration is at work, without hesitating. she looked to the heaven’s and said, “The rain!”

Ironically this was while the interview was taking place during a summer shower in Melville. “The rain delays us because it’s not safe to do some of our work when it’s wet. This causes delays which frustrates us and our community.”

Her favourite dish is called uJeqe bantsisi, or steamed buns with beans and is something she prepares as often as she can on weekends, especially when the weather is cold. Cooking is her favourite pastime and ‘is an activity we can do as a family when we spend time together’.
