Order up!

One night working at a local restaurant change the perspective of one local youth.

Alexandra Vivier writes:
I was given the incredible opportunity of waitressing at the Spur evening organised by my school.

I was hesitant to do it at first as I had no idea what may lie ahead and if I’d be able to handle it. Upon reflection, waitressing at Spur was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It gave me a whole new perspective on how difficult it is to be in the restaurant industry and how hard the waiters and waitresses have to work.

It also gave me a sense of independence. It was extremely laborious as we were constantly taking orders, checking that our customers were happy, and ensuring that everything that needed to be done was accomplished as quickly as possible.

We all had waitresses or waiters helping us navigate our way around our new ‘job’, they made the evening far less arduous. As my waitress and I we were rushing around through the crowd of my peers and restaurant employees, trying to get our orders in, she said to me ‘welcome to the industry’ and I will never forget those four simple words. I learnt so much just from five hours of waitressing, lessons I would have never learnt in a classroom.

It enabled me to connect with my peers in a way that I would never have been able to in any other set of circumstances and gave me a whole new level of respect for everyone that works in the restaurant industry. It was a truly humbling experience that showed me how privileged I am. I have since gained a new level of independence, motivation and appreciation towards everything I do in my daily life, all from five hours of waitressing at the Spur.
