VOX POP: Views of young people when it comes to elections

It's important for young people to take part in elections so that they can be able to choose their leaders.

Linda Mthebeni: I always participate in voting because I believe that in that way I am exercising my rights to choose my leaders.

The majority of South African youngsters are uninvolved in political activities. This is because they mostly believe that their views are not heard and their votes are meaningless. Young people lack trust in the political system because many see politicians as corrupt and unresponsive to people’s demands.

Northcliff Melville Times asked the youth about their participation in elections.

Here is what they said:

Tswelelo Melepa: I believe that we as the youth should vote so that our voices can be heard. They have the right to choose their leaders. We should take this as an opportunity to exercise our right to freedom.

Kabelo Makuliri: I am not someone who votes and I am not even registered because it is pointless. There are no changes even after voting. Most of the youth are unemployed and the government is not doing anything to assist with that, so it’s pointless to vote.

Esabeni Moyo: I have stopped voting because I lost faith in our leaders. They don’t do their jobs especially when it comes to service delivery.
