A Highland Gathering like no other

De La Salle Holy Cross College hosts their biggest Highland Gathering to date.

Careful preparations went into this year’s Highland Gathering which was hosted for the 26th time at De La Salle Holy Cross College.

This was their biggest gathering to date to be hosted at the school. A gathering of this sort originated as a sporting event and then became known as a gathering of Scottish clans. Today they’re typically pipe band and highland dancing competitions.

There are only a few schools in the city that have their own pipe bands, and this school is one of them as they have the De La Salle combined band.

The triumphant melodies of 24 bands had their harmonies heard throughout Victory Park. The event also doubled as the All Africa Highland Dancing Championships.

According to Susan Rubbers, one of the event coordinators, this is an important cultural, family and community event, β€œIt is of enormous importance to our college for these reasons. The event is well supported by our loyal school community, the broader Johannesburg area.”

Bands competed throughout the day from about 09:30, and it culminated in a mass bands performance that took place just before 16:00. For the children, the day had them enjoy their time on inflatables for hours on end along with craft stalls and face painting. There were giant slides, space adventures, a climbing wall, a shooting tunnel, and so much more.

For the adults there was an offering of both a tea and beer garden – each one with its own distinct offerings. There was also a plethora of food options and not forgetting a market for attendees to find some unique options to purchase.
