Learning the rules of the road at Sparrow Foundation School

The school recently had a new playground fitted that was made with recycled tyres.

The learners of Sparrow Foundation School are learning road safety rules all while having a great deal of fun.

Thanks to Michelin Tyre Company South Africa, the school recently had a new road safety playground installed.

While they scooted their way around the playground, children made sure to yield, stop, and let pedestrians cross where they had right of way.

The school’s academic manager Alison Button said this road safety playground held great significance for them as it addressed a critical need within their school. “It provides a dedicated area where our learners, regardless of their abilities, can learn about road safety engagingly and practically. Through hands-on experiences, they will develop vital skills and knowledge that will equip them for a lifetime of safe and independent mobility,” she said.

Marcus Baffoe-Bonnie, vice-president and managing director at Michelin Sub-Saharan Africa, reflected on his childhood and multiple times when he almost got hit by a car on his way to school. It was special to him to look around at the playground and its road signs and all its other attributes. “To work for a company that can do things like this is meaningful. Such things are possible when you have the right partners who care and execute what they say they will do.”
What makes the playground more special is that it was constructed using recycled tyres.

Button extended her deepest gratitude to the company. “Your kindness and support have left an indelible mark on our learners.”
