Curves gym in Northcliff tackles period poverty

This October will hopefully put a dent in the battle against period poverty for girls and women who are unable to access or afford sanitary products.

Curves, a ladies-only gym in Northcliff and Kindness like Confetti (KLC) are joining forces to collect and distribute all types of menstrual products with the aim of keeping girls in school.

October will be a special month as the two organisations collaborate to tackle ‘period poverty’ together.

“KLC relies on menstrual products being donated to them, which are then distributed to informal settlements and disadvantaged areas,” said Ruby Oliver, owner of Curves.

Its flagship project, The Pad Princess, not only distributes sanitary products, it also assists several schools and regularly hosts educational and uplifting talks.

The sanitary pad drive will help give women and girls some much-needed assistance to cope with their period.

Dignity bags for raped or abused women, and maternity pads for new mothers are also distributed to various maternity wards at government hospitals.

Chairperson Claire Duvel said, “Our aim is to supply women who have suffered from rape, a sexual offence or trauma (or any form of abuse) with the essentials to clean themselves up after the reporting and examination process at the police stations. The dignity bags consist of items to help the victim regain some dignity after the assault. The handbags contain toiletry basics, such as a new pair of panties, toothpaste and toothbrush, unscented soap and face cloth, a lightweight blanket, a pretty scarf and a notepad and pen, to mention a few.”

Recently they have had requests to start making children’s comfort bags for children caught up in crimes and abuse.
