International Nurses Day at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital

The hospital held a walk and special lunch for its staff of nurses,

In recognition of International Nurses Day, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital held a special event for the nurses of the hospital.

Though the day is observed on May 12, the hospital’s event, which had the nurses dress in their best white uniforms, was held on May 15. It also included an early morning walk through the community. Afterwards, this sea of angelic white headed to the dining hall where a lunch preceded by guest speakers was enjoyed.

Among the day’s many guest speakers was deputy director nursing compliance and research, Bonginkosi Shongwe, who said nursing is a Godly profession, nursing is a gift from God to society. “When you’re a nurse and have been given a title of a nurse, you have been anointed as a champion of giving dignity to others. Without nursing, the dignity of our people cannot be restored.”
He added that this would make them each champions of dignity, a role that requires them to be competent and subscribe to the principles of life-long learning.

Shongwe listed other key traits that should make you a nurse. Nurses need to be skilled, because a nurse who does not know how to read vital signs is a risk to society. It is also very important for them to be optimistic towards society, as their attitude to others is very important. Lastly, that they be ethical and trustworthy in all that they do.

Nurses Day is observed on May 12, as this was the birth date of Florence Nightingale, the woman considered as having been the founder of modern nursing.
