Baking Brixton beautiful
The Brixton community was hosted to its first Brixton Bake Off and it was a mouthwatering experience.
Brixton was in search of its best baker on October 12 and after many mouth-watering bites into an assortment of cupcakes, judges found nothing topped a carrot cupcake wonder.
Hosted by Brixton Community Forum and held at Kingston Frost Park, this was the community’s first-ever event of its kind and based on the reception, it will not be its last bite. The bake-off featured the culinary skills of the community’s children and amateur bakers. The competition’s judges were each esteemed in their own right and were made up of two former residents, chef Lebogang Makhubela and retired justice Edwin Cameron as well as Brixton Pick ‘n Pay owner Nqobile Mazibuko.

In the adult section of the competition, it was a carrot cupcake baked by Leroy Bagoes that had the judges’ taste buds wanting more. All the winners received sponsored goods from Pick ‘n Pay, Soda Stream, Breezblocks, Bridge Books, Linda’s Bake and Pack, and SOS Architects.

Forum chairperson Sophia Welz said they were inspired to have this bake-off in memory of the local baker Alfred Nqayi, who passed away last year at only 33 years old. “He worked at a local children’s home, and learned to bake at Westbury Recreation Centre and later became a chocolatier,” she shared, adding he also worked at the Saxon Hotel.
For the community, it was inspiring to have had someone come from nothing, to super something, she added, so they thought more, young bakers would be inspired by him.The day was also inspired by former community member Flora McCallum who had been a resident for 46 years and recently moved out of the neighbourhood to a retirement village. “She is very much part of this community and we miss her a lot.”
McCallum was part of what made Brixton beautiful as she was part of the community quilting team and would regularly bake with the children. She was given two of many-more-to-come quilted squares that either featured a picture of her cats or baking utensils.
