CGTBA looking to ensure the future of tenpin bowling in South Africa

The future of tenpin bowling looks bright, as the CGTBA's junior programme gets the ball rolling, aimed at empowering the youth and potentially elevating the sport to Olympic status.

The future of tenpin bowling in South Africa is looking bright, thanks to proactive initiatives led by the Central Gauteng Tenpin Bowling Association (CGTBA).

A junior programme has been launched to rejuvenate the sport, focusing on engaging youth and reintroducing tenpin bowling to young people who have been underrepresented in recent years.

The CGTBA’s programme aims to develop bowlers not only in terms of physical skills but also mental and social competencies. By creating a sense of teamwork and healthy competition, the initiative is designed to create a well-rounded experience for participants.

The programme will provide consistent coaching every other Sunday, laying the groundwork for a new generation of bowlers.

Calvin Way, vice chairperson of the CGTBA, stated the importance of this initiative. “We are committed to nurturing young talent in tenpin bowling. This programme is about more than just developing skills; it’s about helping our youth grow both physically and mentally while fostering a community spirit. We believe that by engaging adolescents, we can build a sustainable future for the sport in South Africa.”

In addition to grassroots efforts, discussions are underway to have tenpin bowling recognized as an Olympic sport, which could significantly enhance the sport’s profile in the country. This recognition would not only bring increased attention but also attract resources for development. The benefits of youth participation in tenpin bowling go beyond the lanes.

The sport promotes physical fitness, encourages mental agility, and provides an outlet for stress relief and personal growth. Moreover, it offers the youth a chance to forge lasting friendships and become part of a vibrant community.

Through initiatives like this, the CGTBA is poised to make tenpin bowling a more mainstream sport in South Africa, revealing that it is not just about honing skills but also about having fun and creating opportunities for future champions.
