A come back that gives back big

DLSHCC Alumni Association hosted an evening gala event that saw them raise funds for their community.

The Alumni Association of De La Salle Holy Cross College hosted its Come Back, Give Back Dance recently.
This gala event, held the night after the school’s annual matric dance, is a much-anticipated one that sees the coming together not just of old friends, but raising of funds for future generations.

The evening, along with good food, even better conversation, and the best dance moves any Victory Park floor has seen, featured its third annual silent art auction. This, after the association approached Artist Proof Studio to help run a lino print workshop for learners. This was a new experience for budding young artists to learn a new skill.
The workshop was hosted at the Junior School art studio, and 30 learners from Grades 1 to 11 participated. They were each given an A4 piece of linoleum onto which they carved an image that they had prepped at home under the theme, ‘My favourite thing’.

A week before the gala evening, a preview of the art was held in the junior school foyer, and the community were invited to bid on the pieces. The art was then exhibited in the foyer of the matric dance hall as a highlight of the Come Back, Give Back Dance.

The chairperson of the association, Kathleen Genade, said the dance evening was ultimately about reconnecting, celebrating and most importantly, giving back to the community. “As chairperson, I am thrilled to say it has been a truly outstanding year for us,” she said. “Together we have achieved milestones that reflect the deep bond we all share with this incredible institution and the generosity that flows from it.”

Genade reflected on the previous year’s event, which she said had raised a generous amount for the association’s foundation. The foundation supports education within its community. She added that they have also hosted and been part of various fundraising events, which have raised more than R200 000 for the foundation. With this huge support, the foundation welcomed it’s first learner to the school this year.

Board representative for the alumni, Patrick Munyembate, thanked all who played a hand in making the foundation what it is. He also recognised parents, friends and staff who were always there to encourage and support the foundation in its efforts.
