Young footballers shine at Discovery Knockout Cup finals

Discovery celebrated 16 years of youth football development at their annual Knockout Cup Finals at UJ.

In a bid to develop young footballers at the grassroots level, Discovery hosted the Discovery Knockout Cup Finals at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on June 25.

This event marks the 16th year of the Discovery Johannesburg Primary Schools Soccer Programme, which serves as a vital platform for promoting healthy living and community engagement among children.

Phumelele Kubeka, marketing manager for sponsorships and experiential marketing at Discovery, emphasised the programme’s long-standing commitment to youth football. “Discovery Schools Soccer started all the way back in 2009 to get young children into football,” Kubeka stated. “There is no better way to do it than through grassroots football. The kids are super excited to be here.”

The tournament featured a variety of football matches throughout the year, providing participants with kits and opportunities for their schools to engage in friendly competition.

The event not only creates a love for the sport but also encourages parental involvement, making it a significant occasion for both the young athletes and their families.
