Pollution and sewage threaten Westdene’s waterways
Overflowing drains, illegal dumping, and chemical runoff are turning this once-serene spot into a polluted shadow of itself.
The Westdene Dam is facing a growing environmental crisis as bacteria-laden runoff, solid waste, and chemical pollutants continue to pour into its waters from surrounding stormwater drains. The dam, a once-popular public space nestled in a residential suburb, is now under siege from unchecked urban pollution.
Reports state that it is a combination of garbage, raw sewage, and chemical waste flowing into the dam through multiple stormwater drains connected to surrounding roads and properties. These drains, designed to carry rainwater, have effectively become open conduits for litter and toxic substances.

Dr Ferrial Adam, a water activist from WaterCAN, said the situation reflects a much broader issue with urban development and the mismanagement of public open spaces across Johannesburg.

“Litter and polluted water don’t just harm the environment — they strip public spaces of their beauty and drive people away,” Adam added, “When rivers, wetlands, or ponds are clogged with waste, it sends a message of neglect. Pollution also restricts people’s ability to connect with nature and fully enjoy open spaces that should offer peace, recreation, and renewal.”
The city’s Environment and Infrastructure Services Department was contacted for comment, and the update will be published once made available.
