The runner who never stopped chasing the next challenge

Chairman of Run Zone Athletics, Graham Block, who is always motivating the next runner and those around him.

Eight years ago, Graham Block’s life took a sharp turn. The seasoned athlete, once immersed in the world of professional running, was forced to confront a serious health issue.

Years of stress had taken a toll, leading to inflammation in his heart and muscles. Doctors advised him to change his lifestyle – a moment that could easily have ended his decades-long relationship with the sport.

“I was fortunate enough to be in the position to retire as a professional runner,” Block recalled. With three decades of experience behind him, the discipline that had long defined his life – early mornings, group sessions, and races – refused to fade.

What began with small gestures, such as supporting runners out of the boot of his car, quickly evolved into something far greater. Alongside his wife, Tersia, Block founded Run Zone Athletics in 2017.

In less than a decade, the club has grown into one of the largest in South Africa, now counted among the top three clubs represented at the Comrades Marathon and competing in size with corporate giants such as Vitality, Nedbank and Hollywood Bets.

For Block, the growth of Run Zone is not about personal accolades. He is quick to acknowledge his wife’s unwavering support and the team around him, crediting them with driving the club’s shared mission: keeping people motivated.

From its modest beginnings, Run Zone has developed into a community that welcomes everyone – from first-time walkers to ultramarathon veterans. Inclusivity and inspiration, Block said, remain at the core of the club’s identity.

Now 41, Block serves as chairperson of Run Zone, based in Northcliff, while also maintaining his reputation as a leader who has been actively involved in the running community for more than 20 years.

His appetite for challenge runs deep, rooted in a background in mountaineering and rock climbing. “I’ve always been an extremist by nature,” he admitted.

That same drive translated into running. A casual jog soon became a time trial, then a first 10km. From there, distances escalated: 15km, 50km, the Comrades Marathon, the Two Oceans, the SkyRun 100, 160km races, and even 1 000km challenges.

Though retired from professional competition for eight years, Block’s commitment has never been solely about his own achievements.

His parallel mission – to inspire others – remains as strong as ever. Whether leading training groups or encouraging social runners at club sessions, motivating those around him has come naturally.

From personal setback to national influence, Block’s journey mirrors the ethos of the club he built: resilience, reinvention, and relentless dedication to community.
