Fire contained on Fulham Road
Residents rushed in with water buckets before firefighters arrived, helping contain a fire that damaged two rooms on Fulham Road.
A fire broke out on September 29 at a building on Fulham Road in Brixton near St Nicholas Orthodox Church, leaving one room gutted and another damaged after the flames spread.
According to Joburg Emergency Medical Services firefighter Wessel Molale, they arrived to find the unit still engulfed in flames. “One single room was mostly affected. The fire spread to the other room,” he said.

Before emergency services arrived, nearby residents had rushed in with buckets of water in an attempt to contain the blaze. Their efforts helped slow the spread, though many of them suffered smoke inhalation.

“We went in with our hoses and water and managed to put it out within three minutes,” Molale confirmed. Gauteng EMS personnel were on the scene to treat those affected by the smoke.

No casualties were reported. The cause of the fire remains unclear, and Joburg EMS crews were still at the scene late that afternoon.
