Westdene residents revive neglected Ayr Road Circle through community spirit

Once an overgrown dumping ground and safety hazard, the circle has been beautifully restored thanks to the dedication of residents.

What was once an overgrown dumping ground and a growing security concern has been transformed into one of Westdene’s most cared-for green spaces, thanks to the determined efforts of residents.

The revival of the Ayr Road Circle began in March 2024, when the area had reached a state of complete neglect — overrun with weeds, litter, and a mounting safety risk.

For years, resident Sally Vendel had tried to maintain the space, but with little support, her efforts eventually had to stop about two to three years ago.

Then came a turning point. Clint Hill, a Westdene resident, decided to take action.

Vendel said that he personally funded a major clean-up and brought in Creass Community Services, founded by Danny Nunes of Melville, to clear the site.

“This huge initiative was funded mainly by Clint, with some donations from a few others,” said Vendel. “Many, many thanks to you, Clint.”

Once the area was cleared, a small group of residents, including Vendel, picked up the baton. They met with Hill and offered to take on the responsibility of ongoing maintenance.

“A few people in our surrounding streets initially committed to a monthly pledge amount, and we reached out to the bigger Westdene area for donations,” Vendel explained.

In a surprising turn, many of the most consistent contributions have come from residents living on the other side of Westdene — people who simply enjoy passing by the now-beautiful circle on their daily drives.
