UPDATE: Sewage overflow far more complex at Laerskool Esparanza Primary
Learners and staff have to continue enduring the sewage smell after Johannesburg Water discovered that the problem was more problematic than expected.
The persistent sewage overflow at Laerskool Esparanza Primary in Newlands is still ongoing for the learners at the school, and the issue seems harder to resolve in restoring the learning environment for the staff and learners.
Principal Anthony Louw spoke to the publication on September 30 to report on the conditions that they have to endure.

“It is heartbreaking and infuriating. It looks like the pipe is blocked, and now there is a trench where filth and sewage flow down along the school fence on the street.”
Louw stated that his Grade R class is right next to the overflowing sewage. “This is dangerous and unhygienic, and it is unfair to my learners”, said Louw.
Johannesburg Water, in May this year, said that the problem required major technical intervention. Nearly five months later, the issue persists.

JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala responded to the publication’s recent media query, confirming that the blockage affecting the school grounds has been challenging to resolve despite several attempts by the depot to clear it using mechanical equipment.
“These efforts were unsuccessful, suggesting the issue is more complex than initially expected and it requires more specialised equipment than what is available at the depot level.”
