Melville’s Resource Gallery becomes a creative community hub
What began as a pop-up is now a local hub for artists, children and families to create and connect.
In the heart of Melville, a once-empty storefront has transformed into a vibrant space for art, community and creativity.
The Resource Gallery, founded and curated by Nkululeke Mabe, has quietly evolved over the past six months into a local cultural hub where artists, children and families come together to create, learn and connect.
What was supposed to be just a pop-up show proved to be a success. Over time, the space evolved beyond an exhibition venue into something much more dynamic. “In the beginning, it was just trying things out and working with different people,” said Mabe. “But eventually, I aligned it with the vision I had — to make it a community space as much as a gallery.”

Today, the Resource Gallery stands as both an art gallery and a community project space, welcoming people from Melville and beyond to engage in a range of creative activities. It hosts workshops for children and parents, covering everything from painting and clay sculpture to papier-mâché, collages and other forms of hands-on artmaking.

Adding another layer to its purpose, the Resource Gallery partners with Hotel Hope Ministries, a local charity that supplies the gallery with furniture to sell, with proceeds going back to support their work.
Beyond visual art, the gallery also embraces music and performance, inviting local musicians to share their craft and bringing art to life in sound and movement. “We work closely with the community,” Mabe said. “The idea is to make it a space where people can come and create — a place that belongs to Melville.”
