Women for Change bring a haunting silence to Emmarentia at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens

Hundreds of women gathered at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens for the Women for Change shutdown, and even being blocked from entering didn’t slow them down.

One of the many women’s shutdowns, hosted by Women for Change, took place at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens.

Showing up in their numbers, dressed in black with notes of purple, this silent protest was the powerful statement many of the women in attendance knew warranted their presence.

The protest featured a 15-minute silent lie down, aiming to honour the 15 daily victims of femicide in South Africa.

Meeting at this venue was, at first, met with a level of contention, as they found they were not allowed to gather inside the gardens.

However, ever resilient, the women opted to protest in the parking lot, staying true to their mission to be voice for the many women and children who either lost their voice through violence, or still live with it in its many forms.

Tearful hugs, sincere looks of deep understanding, only shared between women, and an eerie silence brought on only by sadness, were just the few traits that made this protest silently powerful.
