Hursthill 2 reservoir to undergo seven-day dummy test before structural repair work begins
The dummy test will assist Johannesburg Water understand system performances and assist in the rehabilitation work efficiently.
Johannesburg Water (JW) will conduct a seven-day dummy test prior to starting structural repairs on the Hursthill 2 (HH2) reservoir.
During this test, customers will be supplied via an alternate feed, instead of the normal outlet supply. Customers are requested to report any anomalies.
The dummy test, which will begin on December 1 and run to December 7, will help JW understand system performances and plan the rehabilitation project effectively.

On December 3, customers reported no water supply challenges. Technical issues related to the inlet and outlet configuration were resolved, and monitoring continues for the remainder of the dummy test.
The entity will assess the outcomes of this testing phase to address any shortcomings and optimisation.
Once the assessment is complete, the bypass will be implemented and remain active until the estimated project completion date of April 9, 2026.
Any further unforeseen matters, which may affect this estimated timeline, will be communicated.
The system may experience low pressure or intermittent supply, and alternative water supply may be provided. While some disruptions may persist, this work is essential to improving storage capacity and reducing supply interruptions in the long term.
Regular updates on progress will be provided weekly, with ad hoc notifications if any challenges occur. Feedback sessions with councillors and affected communities will be scheduled through the Johannesburg Stakeholder Department.

The rehabilitation work continues throughout this period to maximise work during the low-demand festive season, and prepare for the remainder of the project.
JW acknowledges the prolonged supply disruptions in the HH2 supply zone, including Emmarentia. The rehabilitation project aims to enhance storage capacity and reduce supply interruptions.
Additional interventions include:
• Expansion of the Commando system,
• Construction of a new Brixton reservoir and tower, and
• Installation of two additional pump stations, at Crosby for Brixton and Hursthill supply
These projects aim to address the root cause of supply challenges in HH2 and the broader Commando system.
