70 reclaimers get ready to clean Brixton
As a show of gratitude for residents’ years of care and their legacy of collaboration, 70 reclaimers are taking to Brixton streets to share their knowledge and keep them clean.
70 professional reclaimers will be traveling through the Brixton neighbourhood on December 13, lending a hand in refreshing the streets and expressing deep gratitude to Brixton residents for their years of care and resilience.
Sophia Welz, chairperson of the Brixton Community Forum, said the reclaimers view this neighbourhood as part of their community, seeing this as a meaningful act of service and partnership that builds on a shared history.

“The day will unfold across Brixton’s hotspots, with teams of reclaimers working alongside residents to clean, tidy, and implement practical strategies to reduce litter in problem areas.”
Beyond the physical cleaning, the event aims to leave behind ‘know‑how’ that residents can carry forward to keep Brixton beautiful, welcoming, and safe.
Residents are encouraged to come out and help with cleaning and tidying efforts. “It will be an opportunity to meet the reclaimers, learn straightforward steps to maintain cleaner streets, and share ideas on how to support safer, more connected public spaces.”

The event also marks a continuation of a long-standing collaboration that began with a formal agreement in 2018 between the forum and the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO). A partnership born from shared concern about waste, environmental justice, and community resilience.
“From battling serious waste challenges to navigating Covid lockdowns and food relief efforts, Brixton has fought these battles together – over many cups of tea and in many conversations.”
