Private security steps in during Westdene fire scare
With no emergency services on scene, a Tau reaction officer took charge to help protect the community.
A potentially dangerous fire incident in Westdene was brought under control by Tau private security company reaction officer, Thulani Magqina after he was alerted to the situation on the early evening of January 2, on Dublin Road.
Before arriving on scene, Magqina received a video showing tyres burning in the street.
“At first, I thought a building was on fire,” he said, describing his initial concern before arrival. Once there he found burning tyres that posed a risk of spreading and endangering nearby residents.

Magqina prioritised preventing the fire from escalating.
Using his fire extinguisher, and worked to contain the flames while instructing residents and members of the public to keep a safe distance. No public emergency services arrived at the time, leaving Magqina and local residents as the only responders on scene.
According to Magqina, private security plays a vital role during such incidents by ensuring community safety and controlling situations until official emergency services arrive.

His quick thinking and decisive action helped prevent further damage and ensured residents remained safe during the incident.
