Visible policing pays off as Flying Squad scores successes in three areas

Operations in Brixton, Booysens, and Alexandra led to arrests and stolen motor vehicle recoveries.

A 30-year-old man is expected to appear in the Brixton Magistrate’s Court following his arrest by members of the Johannesburg Flying Squad during a patrol in Brixton on January 19.

According to police, officers were patrolling the corner of Collins Street at about 14:00 when they stopped and searched a male suspect.

The search uncovered nine Ziplock bags containing crystal meth, a mandrax tablet, and a counterfeit United States $100 note. The drugs were estimated to have a street value of R3 000.

The suspect was arrested on charges of possession of drugs, possession of counterfeit money, and for contravening the Immigration Act 13 of 2002. He was detained at Brixton SAPS for further investigation.

In a separate operation on the same day, Flying Squad members patrolling the Booysens policing precinct spotted a white VW Polo at the corner of Swartgoud and Jane streets.

A check revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen. It was seized and booked into the police pound for safekeeping and further investigation.

Later, at around 17:00, officers recovered a black Honda motorcycle at the corner of John Brandt Street and 16th Avenue in Alexandra. The motorcycle had been stolen from its owner and was also booked into the pound.

Johannesburg Flying Squad communications officer Raymond Sambo said the operations highlighted the impact of visible policing. “These arrests and recoveries demonstrate our members’ commitment to combating drug-related crime and the recovery of stolen property through continuous patrols.”
