Archers aim for national championships in Emmarentia

Archers from across Southern Africa have gathered in Johannesburg for a weekend of high-level competition and skill.

The 76th South African National Archery Championships are currently underway at Marks Park, bringing together top talent from across the region for a weekend of precision and competition.

Hosted by Marks Park Archery Club, the event runs from March 27 to 29 and features 151 archers from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Kenya — making it one of the largest national gatherings in recent years.

“This is a big entry for us,” said Charmaine Ho, who is part of the judges’ commission. “At normal competitions, you might see 30 to 45 archers, so this is almost triple.”

The competition began with official practice and ranking rounds on Friday, where archers shot 72 arrows to determine their standings. The weekend will then progress into elimination rounds, to culminate in gold and bronze medal matches, some of which will be live-streamed on Sunday.

For many, the championships are about more than just winning. “Everybody wants the experience,” Ho explained. “You’re meeting people from different provinces and countries, and that’s part of what makes it special.”

Behind the scenes, months of planning have gone into preparing the field and coordinating the event.

As the competition unfolds, organisers hope participants leave not only with results, but with a sense of achievement. “If they’ve enjoyed it and come back next time, then we’ve done something right,” said Ho.
