Hofmeyer Drive repairs stall

Residents still wait for answers as a once-dangerous washout site on Hofmeyer Drive shows changes, but remains incomplete.

At a glance, the worst of the danger along Hofmeyer Drive appears to have passed, but a closer look tells a more complicated story.

One of partial fixes, lingering debris, and unanswered questions.

The barricades set up by Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) are still present, after erosion carved into the roadside, leaving a deep washout exposing underground services and threatening the edge of the road.

The damage was believed to have been caused by water from a nearby stream, diverted after a blockage.

During an inspection on May 6, the most immediate hazard the steep drop was no longer visible.

The ground appeared more level, suggesting that some intervention had taken place to reduce the risk, yet the site remains far from complete.

Piles of broken concrete, bricks, and soil now sit along the roadside, while temporary barriers appear displaced rather than actively guiding or protecting traffic.

JRA had previously indicated it would provide feedback by April 22. That update has yet to materialise, leaving residents without clarity on the scope of repairs, timelines, or whether the current state of the site represents progress or a pause in work.

For those familiar with the road, the situation raises a pressing concern: While the immediate danger may have been reduced, the lack of completion and communication continues to frustrate.

The publication followed up with JRA on May 6, to which they replied that the query is still in progress.
