Neighbourhood safety under spotlight at Sophiatown Sector 4 community meeting

Residents of Albertsville and Albertskroon gathered for the meeting aimed at addressing local concerns, strengthening partnerships, and enhancing safety across Sector 4.

Residents from Albertsville and Albertskroon voiced a range of concerns affecting their communities during a Community Policing Forum (CPF) meeting hosted by Sophiatown SAPS Sector 4 at the Albertskroon swimming pool on June 7.

The meeting provided a platform for residents to engage directly with law enforcement and raise issues impacting safety and quality of life in their neighbourhoods.

Among the most pressing concerns were allegations of illegal liquor outlets operating within residential areas, which residents said contribute to criminal activity and public disorder.

Sector 4 Manager Sergeant Benneth Maluleke assured attendees that the concerns raised during the meeting would be referred to the relevant authorities for further attention.

Residents also highlighted the impact that illegal alcohol sales have on crime in their communities, with concerns ranging from violent altercations to robberies.

The condition and use of public parks also emerged as a key topic during the discussion.

Residents expressed concern about individuals sleeping in parks and the effect this has on spaces intended for families and children.

The meeting formed part of ongoing efforts by Sophiatown SAPS and the CPF to strengthen relationships between police and residents while creating a direct channel for communities to raise local concerns.

Maluleke said community participation remains vital in identifying problems and ensuring that issues affecting residents are brought to the attention of the appropriate departments for action
