Caleb Swart fights his way to third African MMA title

South African MMA fighter Caleb Swart is taking the combat sports world by storm after winning another African title and climbing to third in the world rankings.

South African mixed martial arts star Caleb Swart is proving that hard work, discipline and belief can take an athlete to the top of the continent – and closer to the world stage.

Caleb recently claimed gold at the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation All Africa MMA Championships, earning his third African championship title, while also winning gold at the MMA-SA National Championships to secure his fourth South African title. The rising fighter is currently ranked third in the world in his weight class and has his sights firmly set on becoming a world champion. “After my first gold medal for Africa in 2024, I knew that my next goal was to become a three-time champ,” said Caleb. “To win for the third time this year was amazing. My ultimate goal is to be world champion, though.”

For this Northcliff High School Grade 11 learner, success is built long before stepping into the cage. Training under his father, Wiekus, at WSG Academy, the young fighter follows an intense routine that starts before school and often ends late at night. “When prepping for a major tournament, I train for several hours a day across various skill sets to improve my stamina, technique and timing,” he said.
His dedication has already seen him compete against some of the world’s best athletes. At the 2024 World Championships in Abu Dhabi, Caleb fought through a torn hamstring injury to finish third overall. “This experience taught me a lot about mental endurance and trying your best no matter what odds are against you.”

Despite already becoming a multiple national and continental champion, Caleb remains focused on the future. “My next goal is winning gold at Worlds in Abu Dhabi in August.” Driven by an unshakable mindset and love for the sport, Caleb believes every training session moves him closer to his dream. “If anyone doesn’t believe in you, make it your mission to prove them wrong.”
