The Hotel Hope Ministries’ charity shop, in Melville, is a shop where strangers become regulars
Customers may come for the second-hand treasures, but many return because they feel like family at the Hotel Hope Ministries charity shop.
For Grace Pemba, Hotel Hope Ministries’ charity shop is about far more than second-hand furniture, vintage décor, and hidden treasures; it’s about people.
Having helped at the Melville store since she was young, before officially joining the team this year, Pemba has watched countless strangers become familiar faces. “There isn’t one type of person who walks through our doors. This community is such a diverse one, and that’s what makes this place so special.”
Some visitors stop by in search of a unique piece for their home. Others just come to say hello. Pemba smiled as she recalled one regular customer who visits almost every day. “It’s only a two-minute conversation, but those little moments can really brighten someone’s day.”
She has also seen how something as simple as choosing a painting or vase can help someone feel at home. One customer, who recently moved into a new apartment, arrived feeling overwhelmed. Together they selected a few decorative pieces that transformed the space. “She later came back and told me she was going to host a housewarming party.”

Helping the customer didn’t feel like she was working, instead it felt like she was helping a friend. That sense of connection, she believes, is what sets the shop apart. Customers are greeted by name, conversations happen naturally, and everyone is welcome to browse without pressure. “We want people to feel safe here. Even if they’ve had a bad day, we want them to know someone cares enough to ask how they’re doing.”
Every purchase also helps support the children cared for by Hotel Hope Ministries, something that keeps Pemba motivated every day. “When I see the children smiling, that’s all the motivation I need.”

She added that sometimes something as simple as buying one item from the shop can help give a child opportunities they might never have had.
For Pemba, that’s the real value of the shop. It isn’t measured by what’s on the shelves, but by the community that continues to grow around them… One conversation, one customer, and one act of kindness at a time.
