Wits University Flower Hall was buzzing with creativity on August 1 as hundreds of learners showcased innovative ideas at the annual Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Johannesburg Regional Science Fair.

A total of 455 learners presented 335 projects, tackling everything from engineering and agriculture to environmental, scientific and community challenges.

Johannesburg Regional Science Fair director Jane Wasonga said what stood out most was the passion learners brought to their research.

“Most of them are trying to solve the current problems that we have – community problems, social problems, scientific problems, engineering problems and agricultural problems,” she said.

Judges were particularly impressed by how confidently learners explained their work, with Wasonga encouraging even more young people to participate in future. “This is a tough expo, but the confidence they gain afterwards is massive,” she said.

One of these projects was a portable “Pocket Vacuum” designed by Tumelo Mokoena and Joshua Kleyn. Small enough to fit into a pocket or car compartment, the invention also features a built-in light, making it easier to clean small spaces.

“We wanted something that’s easier to use than a big vacuum cleaner,” said Mokoena.

“We thought about people who like to keep their spaces clean.”

The pair hopes their invention will inspire others to think creatively and build on their idea.

As learners shared their research, the fair highlighted that today’s classroom curiosity could become tomorrow’s life-changing innovation.
