Beagle Watch has launched the Smit Street Fence Fund to secure the area following approval to clean up the Smit Street dump site in Fairland and complete the perimeter fence around the adjacent park.

According to Beagle Watch managing director Andre Aiton, the Smit Street dump site had been an eyesore and non-operational for years, attracting displaced people who scavenged and lived there, which increased crime, loitering, littering, and fire hazards.

Aiton said this was why they fought for the clean-up and fence completion, adding that the park will be open during daylight hours and locked at night to provide Fairland residents with a safe green space. He said they need to raise R220 000 for the project and are asking Fairland residents and businesses to contribute to the final phase of securing the park.

Aiton said every contribution helps, whether from a homeowner, local business, or anyone who cares about a safer Fairland.
