The Northcliff Warriors concluded their third rugby season with increased player numbers, stronger administrative systems and a clear vision to serve the local community for generations.

According to Northcliff Warriors Rugby Club chairperson Johan Muller, the 2026 season was a success, marked by significant improvements on and off the field. With the Golden Lions Rugby Union’s (GLRU) focus remaining on development, Muller said one of their biggest achievements was the continued growth in player numbers, particularly among the U6, U7 and U8 age groups.

He added that this year also marked the first time the younger teams played tag rugby, with players and coaches adapting well to the new format. Muller said administration and management systems had also improved significantly, giving coaches and players greater accountability to concentrate on rugby. “One of the challenges came at the older junior levels, where several U11, U12 and U13 players were selected for interprovincial teams. While their absence affected the club season, the selections were ultimately a reflection of the progress being made through coaching and player development.”

The club’s standout moment came over two consecutive weekends on July 11 and 18, when Northcliff hosted other GLRU clubs. More than 70 matches were played on each day, turning both weekends into major occasions for the club and its wider rugby community.

Muller said their players continued to improve throughout the season, with the emphasis remaining on development rather than simply results. He also added that the biggest factor behind their progress has been community. “A club is built by its players, coaches and parents, and everyone must buy into the same vision.”

He said the club wants to establish a club that can continue serving Northcliff for generations, with everyone involved playing a role in building that future. The official 2026 GLRU club season concluded with the Warriors’ final matches at Pirates on September 19.

Their attention has now turned to the sevens season in October, followed by preparations for 2027 and the club’s annual coaching clinic during the first week of December.

Muller said their immediate goal is to finish the year strongly in sevens while preparing players for the 2027 season, which begins in January.

The club also believes the season has reinforced an important lesson: building a successful rugby club requires the contribution of an entire community. For the Northcliff Warriors, the 2026 season will ultimately be remembered not simply for what happened on the field, but for the foundations being laid for the years ahead.
