Redemption season for FNB Wits rugby ends in championship victory

Wits rugby completed a flawless Varsity Shield campaign, winning all nine matches and sealing the title with a dominant final performance to cap a remarkable turnaround season.

The University of the Witwatersrand erupted in celebration on April 14 as its triumphant rugby side paraded through campus.
This was to mark a remarkable turnaround season that culminated in FNB Varsity Shield glory. Students, staff, and supporters gathered at the Wits Great Hall to celebrate the unbeaten champions, just days after the team sealed the title with a commanding 44–18 victory over FNB WSU in the final on April 10. The win capped an extraordinary campaign in which the side won all nine of their fixtures, racking up an impressive 509 points along the way.

The occasion carried added weight. A year ago, the team endured the disappointment of relegation. Now, they stand restored – champions once again and firmly back on course for the Varsity Cup.

Vice-chancellor and principal Zeblon Vilakazi addressed the crowd, framing the achievement as more than just a sporting success. He praised the players’ grit and sacrifice, describing them as warriors who had carried the institution’s pride through a demanding season. He also acknowledged the collective effort behind the scenes, crediting the coaching staff, Dean of student affairs Jerome September, and the wider university support system for helping steer the team’s resurgence.

September, speaking with visible pride, reflected on what he called a journey defined by resilience and belief. He recalled early doubts during the opening match, when the team faced a challenging first half, but said that moment became a turning point. From there, the players regrouped, took control of their campaign, and never looked back. He emphasised that the team’s story mirrored that of the university itself – falling, but never staying down. According to him, the players set their sights on promotion from the outset, determined to return to the Varsity Cup. Their unbeaten run, he said, was proof of that resolve.

The final offered a fitting conclusion. Facing WSU once more, the side settled unfinished business in emphatic style, running in eight tries to secure the title in front of a packed home crowd. With promotion already secured after topping the log, the victory confirmed their status as undisputed champions of the 2026 FNB Varsity Shield season.
