From an unexpected school audition to the royal stage

A chance opportunity at eight years old sparked a lifelong love of performing. Now, after more than 15 years in the arts, Donae Brazer is bringing Queen Catherine to life in Sleeping Beauty The Musical.

Sometimes, one unexpected opportunity is all it takes to change the course of a life.

For Donae Brazer, it happened when she was eight years old. Growing up in a relatively underprivileged area, she attended a school without an arts programme. That changed when the school began planning a production and brought in musician Franz Geldenhuys to oversee the music. The lead roles had already been chosen, but Geldenhuys felt one performer could not sing the part. He searched for a replacement and, unexpectedly, chose Brazer. “The moment I started singing, I fell in love with it, and I never stopped,” she said.

That moment sparked a journey that has taken her from school productions and youth choir to musical theatre, international competitions and professional performances. After studying musical theatre, Brazer went on to perform in productions including Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Evita. She has also performed as a solo artist, sung with the band Zig Zag and explored voice-over work.’

More than 15 years into her career, she remains grateful for the people who have supported her along the way, particularly her mother, brother and partner, Brad. “They’ve stood by me through the highs and the challenges, and I feel infinitely lucky to have them in my life,” she said. “I wouldn’t be who I am today without them.”

Brazer describes her latest character as graceful, quietly strong and deeply human. “Beneath the crown is a mother who loves deeply, worries deeply and simply wants the best for her family,” she explained.

Although Brazer is not a mother herself, exploring the queen’s instinct to protect her child has been an exciting challenge. She has drawn on her own nurturing side to understand the emotions behind Catherine’s decisions. “For me, it’s always about finding the human being beneath the character,” she said.

The production offers a fresh take on the familiar fairy tale, with a more relatable Princess Aurora who has her own opinions, emotions and rebellious streak. For Brazer, being part of the African premiere and working alongside a talented cast of adults and children has been a particularly special experience.

Now a recent Melville resident, she is also excited to share the magic of live theatre with families in her local community. “Being able to take someone out of their everyday stresses and transport them into another world is one of the most rewarding parts of performing,” she said.

She hopes that, whether young or old, audiences will leave the theatre with smiles on their faces and memories to treasure. For Brazer, the message of Sleeping Beauty The Musical reaches beyond enchanted castles and fairy-tale endings. She hopes audiences will be reminded that even when life takes an unexpected turn, there is always room for hope. “Life doesn’t always go according to plan, but that doesn’t mean the story is over. Keep on keeping on,” she said.

She also hopes the story will remind people of the importance of love, courage and kindness. “Sometimes the magic isn’t in enchanted castles or fairy godmothers, but in how we treat one another and the hope we hold on to. There’s always the possibility of brighter days ahead,” she said.

Away from the stage, Brazer plans to continue performing in musicals, plays, weddings, birthdays and corporate events while auditioning for new roles and exploring creative opportunities. She embraces the uncertainty of a performing career, saying she never quite knows what lies around the corner – and that is part of the excitement.

From a little girl unexpectedly discovering her voice to an experienced performer preparing to play a queen, Brazer’s journey is a reminder that talent can emerge in the most unlikely places when someone is given a chance, and now, through her work on stage, she hopes to pass that feeling on: inspiring others to keep dreaming, persevere through challenges and find their own ways to bring a little more joy into the world.
