Fifth place in ocean race

The first Ocean Racing Championship of the International Canoe Federation took place in Portugal on 12 to 14 July attracting more than 380 athletes.

South African athletes demonstrated their talent and swept-up four of the six medals.

Sean Rice who was recently crowned South African Ocean Race Champion, was the first to return to the shoreline, setting a blistering pace and winning the world title in a time of 1hour 30minutes.
An Australian duo took the silver and bronze medals while Matthew Bouman from Natal finished his race in fourth place.

Emmarentia resident Grant van der Walt finished the race in fifth place in 1 hour 31 minutes. Hank McGregor the current world marathon champion finished seventh with Jasper Mocke in ninth.
The conditions in the sea on the north coast of Portugal were very flat compared to the South Africans usual turbulent coastline.
