Baseball wins at Marks Park Sports Club
EMMARENTIA – The National Baseball Championships were held at Marks Park Sports Club and Gauteng teams took all the glory.
The junior division of the South African National Baseball Championships took place at Marks Park Sports Club, where the players passionately competed on the diamond to win for their province.
Close to 400 players participated in the four-day tournament from 8 to 11 April, that had them pitch, bat and field for their respective teams.
The final day of the tournament saw Gauteng U18A win 15–2 against Western Province A.
Allen McCabe, chairperson of the Mustangs, Marks Park’s baseball club, said the tournament was fantastic.
“Everyone enjoyed themselves,” he said, mentioning that the team to beat was Western Province, as last year the province had won in all their age categories.
However, the left field win by Gauteng in the final was a great surprise to all who came out to watch.
McCabe added that the turnout was exceptional, adding that families came out in support of their teams and it was great to see them get immersed in the sport they all love so much.
One of the teams that participated in the tournament was the U12 team from Limpopo. The team’s coach, Daniel Mokgehle said this was his team’s first tournament.
“The team only started playing together about two months ago,” he said.
Mokgehle added that for a team that had only had one camp to prepare and still managed to win two games, was great to see.
“It was the first time we participated in a tournament of this magnitude and I am very proud of them.”
