Salome is ultra special

FAIRLAND – Salome Cooper finishes 12th in the Old Mutual Two Oceans ultra marathon.

Local runner, Salome Cooper has made a surging comeback in the Old Mutual Two Oceans ultra marathon, taking an impressive 12th place finish in the women’s category after a 12-year break from the race.

The two-time Comrades Marathon gold medalist, and Fairland resident said she was more than happy with her time of 4:08:32 in her fourth Two Oceans ultra marathon, especially as her previous finishing time was almost five hours.

“I was aiming for around four hours, so yes I am happy,” she said. “My biggest challenge was at Constantia Nek because the road curves up the long slope and you don’t see the end. I hadn’t done it in such a long time so I couldn’t remember how long the hill was.”

Cooper has been running for 15 years and when asked when she will stop, she laughed before answering.

“I will stop running when I don’t enjoy it anymore. Running clears my mind, it helps me think clearly.”

Cooper’s next big run is the Comrades Marathon on 4 June, for which she is training twice a day.

“I’m doing lots of mileage training and want to finish the Comrades in under seven hours.”
