Johannesburg Police Rugby Club (Bobbies) loves its new home

EMMARENTIA – Local rugby club says it enjoyed its nine years at Marks Park Sports Club.

It has been three months since Johannesburg Police Rugby Club (Bobbies) moved from Marks Park Sports Club, Emmarentia, to Hoërskool Die Burger in Bergbron.

Vice-chairperson of Bobbies, James du Toit said while Marks Park had some of the best facilities and rugby fields around, the club has no regrets in making the move.

“The facilities at Die Burger are also great, and we have had a lot of new and younger people join the club,” he said.

Du Toit explained that Marks Park was situated between Pirates Sports Club, the University of Johannesburg and Wits University, and as such its position made it difficult to attract and keep younger players.

The move to an area where Bobbies is the only rugby club around has made it easier for everyone.

“We are still competing in the Pirates Grand Challenge B section and our goal is to finish in the top two of the 11 clubs and earn a playoff match for promotion to the A section. So far pre-season has gone very well.”

He continued that the club had won all its friendlies in pre-season and had good camaraderie after players spent a weekend playing rugby together in Malelane, Mpumalanga.

“The spirit was unbelievable and you can see the guys are playing for each other.”

Bobbies is a rugby club that is a whopping 129 years old, and has seen its share of name changes and moving around.

But the past nine years at Marks Park saw the club retake its original name, Johannesburg Police Rugby Club, and establish itself as a force to be reckoned with in Gauteng club rugby.

Now more than ever, Du Toit believes the club can grow its depth in the first team, senior division and junior section.
