Cliffview progresses to final of Discovery Knockout Cup

CLIFFVIEW – Local girls soccer team reaches the final of a knockout tournament.

Cliffview Primary School’s U12 soccer girls have booked their fourth final in five years at the Discovery Knockout Cup.

Barring one semi-final exit last year, the side has enjoyed dominance in the annual tournament that features many of Joburg’s top primary schools.

Ella Stacey and Lequisha Burger celebrate the equaliser.

After four wins from four matches, Cliffview qualified to play in the semis again on 1 August.

The match was against Lyndhurst Primary School and held at Pirates Sports Club, Greenside.

It was evident that both sides wanted the win badly.

There were fast attacking runs and good chances on either side of the pitch but when Lyndhurst scored first the Cliffview players had to dig deep to find the resolve to get back into the game.

“We made key substitutions and the girls showed fighting spirit to equalise right before the full-time whistle,” said a proud head of sport at Cliffview, Roger Burne.

It was Ella Stacey who scored the goal, and this along with encouragement from the coaches inspired the players to do even better in extra time.

Lequisha Burger keeps the ball alive for Cliffview Primary School.

It was as late as the second half of extra time that Lurich Vukeya put one into the back of the net for Cliffview, and then Ella scored again to make it 3–1 at full time.

“Our team has lots of talent and have trained together for four years. They know each other well,” Burne continued.

“We definitely have a chance to win the final.”

Cliffview will play in the final against Wendywood Primary School on 7 August.
