UJ and Wits dominate top of the table

JOBURG – The competition never ends for UJ and Wits.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Wits University won their fifth round Varsity Football clashes and are now the top two teams on the log.

UJ narrowly beat Tshwane University of Technology (Tut) on 23 August 1–0 while Wits beat North-west University (NWU) 2–1. The result cemented UJ’s place on top of the log while Wits slots into the number two spot.

The match between UJ and Tut was guaranteed to be an intense one as the winner would claim the top spot.

Both teams played their hearts out but a strike in the 51st minute from UJ’s man in form, Mokete Mogaila, was enough to give the orange army the three points. The win extends UJ’s unbeaten run to five games.

Wits came back from behind to win their match after NWU’s Mogomotsi Molefe gave them the lead in the 41st minute.

Wits’ man-of-the-match Tsiriletso Motsogi levelled the score and a goal in the 57th minute from Mahle Mtabane gave Wits the magical three points. It was Wits’ first Varsity Football victory over the team from Mafikeng.

With UJ and Wits only separated by three points and two matches to go before the knockout stage of the tournament, both teams shift their focus to their next matches on 30 August.

UJ will travel to Cape Town to take on the University of the Western Cape while Wits will host the University of Limpopo.
