The best of the best baseball teams battle it out at Marks Park
EMMARENTIA – Gauteng's top baseball teams battle it out at provincials league finals at Marks Parks Sports Club.
It was a day of baseball action when Marks Park Mustangs hosted the finals of the Gauteng Club Championships.
Ten matches determined the winners of various divisions in the local baseball leagues.
It meant that everything was to play for and every run counted when batters stepped up and scored a hit.
“The weather is very good, which we are very thankful for and Marks Park Sports Club is always good for these kinds of tournaments,” said Mustangs chairperson, Allen McGabe.
“It is the final week of the season and all the top clubs are playing for their trophies. The baseball has been very, very good. The season has been very good, perhaps better than usual.”
McGabe said this was because many younger players have come through the ranks in Gauteng’s clubs and shone at league level.
South Africa’s U18 national team also returned from the 2019 U18 Baseball World Cup where they finished in 12th place but showed grit going against the best in the world.
Taipei won the world cup, beating the United States of America 2–1 in the final game.
McGabe hopes that after such a successful season, all of Gauteng’s new players will return to the game next year.
“We don’t want to lose players, but it’s also a stepping stone for younger players to show what they are worth.”
