Bears wrestle down a win

EMMARENTIA – An introduction to Bears Wrestling Club recently participated in the South African Wrestling Federation Nationals.

The Northcliff Melville Times headed to Marks Park Sports Club where it was introduced to Bears Wrestling Club.

What an introduction it was too, though nothing quite like the naïve expectation of seeing a John Cena-like character running through the sports venue as they taunt their opponent while their chosen music plays.

In fact, no expectation could have quite lived up to the reality of the meeting which was courteous and showed more team-building than a lone wolf mentality.

Recently, the wrestling club which forms part of Central Gauteng Wrestling Association participated in the South African Wrestling Federation Nationals in Pretoria. The club has only been operating for about four years so it was a big deal when, at the nationals, their wrestlers attained three gold medals, three silvers and one bronze.

The club’s main referee Bianca Taljaard said, “At Bears Wrestling we are extremely proud of our wrestlers obtaining such great achievements after only four years as there were over 900 wrestlers who entered for the nationals.”

Based on the positive reception we received, it was no wonder the club achieved the wins they worked so hard to achieve. The club consists of wrestlers of all ages and sportsmanship is shown by each wrestler after each bout as the conquered opponent is offered a hand-up by their conqueror.
