A visual art riot at Constitution Hill
JOBURG - Art inspired by original military helmets used in various riots and uprisings in South Africa throughout the '70s and '80s will be studied during a masterclass at the Uhuru Basha youth festival.

The British Council Connect ZA in partnership with youth magazine Live Magazine SA, offers young artists the opportunity to take part in a visual art masterclass as part of their #CreativeHustles series on 12 June.
Presented by Constitution Hill in Hillbrow, the #CreativeHustle is part of the Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival. It will focus on a group exhibition titled Riot.
Featuring 20 artists, Riot showcases art inspired by original military helmets used in various riots and uprisings in South Africa throughout the ’70s and ’80s.
Join group masterclasses led by some of the artists featured in the exhibition including Tenjiwe Nkosi , Pamela Phatsimo , Sindiso Nyoni , Fuzzy Slippers , Mbuso Ndlovu , Ryan Liedemann , Vusi Beauchamp , Craig Smith, Shaun Hill and MJ Turpin.
Attendees will also hear from Kalshnikovv Gallery’s Matthew Dean, CUSS Group’s Jamal Nxedlana and Floating Reverie.
Basha Uhuru is a three-day youth festival from 12 to 14 June which celebrates creative culture and freedom of expression in South Africa.
The festival is a comprehensive look at the wealth of talent and artistic energy that flows through our country, showcasing diverse mediums from visual and performance art to film, music and poetry.#CreativeHustles attendees will also have the chance to attend the festival’s free events.
#CreativeHustles is a partnership between Live Magazine SA and British Council Connect ZA, offering a platform for up-and-coming creatives, aged 18 to 35 years, to engage and build relationships with established industry professionals and to receive creative and career advice.
#CreativeHustles: Visual Art Riot Masterclass takes place at Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg on 12 June from 12pm to 4pm. It is free to attend for anyone between the ages of 18 and 35.
