UJ destroys the Madibaz

AUCKALNDPARK - University of Johannesburg got the better of the Madibaz after beating them 3 – 0 on 28 July.

Newcomers University of Johannesburg destroyed Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (Madibaz) 3 – 0 in a packed Varsity Football clash at AW Muller Stadium in Auckland Park Bunting Road Campus on 28 July.

UJ had a strong start, showing their confidence in front of the energetic supporters who were singing and dancing while vuvuzelas led the way. During the first half, UJ had more chances in goals than the visitors – which nearly paid off.

The rest of the first half was tense with both sides making unnecessary fouls – student supporters were often not pleased with missed goals. During the second half, UJ came back with guns blazing, and striker Pontsho Nyathi managed to find the back of the net, making it 1 – 0 for his team.

The goal boosted the home side’s confidence and they kept putting pressure on the Madibaz. The Madibaz were now feeling the heat as Nyathi came back again in full force by scoring his second goal, making it 2 – 0.

The Madibaz were now worried and tried to press forward, however UJ denied them the opportunity to score.

Ruben de Freitas showed some fighting spirit by ensuring that the host stay in the lead – this resulted in striker Tshepo Tolo breaking through the Madibaz’ defense and scoring the third goal in the 80th minute. The match ended 3 –0 after 93 minutes.

After their well-deserved victory, Ex-Bafana Bafana player and UJ head coach Bradley Carnell informed that he is proud of his team, “it is just three points, we focused on the job we had to do, I am proud of the boys, they worked hard.”

Asked what he did to motivate his players, Carnell said, “The boys don’t need motivation, they played in front of their supporters and that’s all they needed.”
