SOPHIATOWN – KwaZulu-Natal pianist, Wandile Molefe, will be enchanting Sophiatown with his jazz piano.

KwaZulu-Natal pianist, Wandile Molefe, will be enchanting the Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre with his Zulu-influenced jazz piano for the Sophiatown Jazz Encounters.

The organisers, Sophiatown the Mix, will host the artist on the evening of 3 November to welcome the new month. Molefe will be one of two Jazz Encounters performers for November, the other being Thandi Nthuli – also a pianist.

Molefe learned to play piano in the late 90s when he moved to Johannesburg as a teenager and has been playing ever since.

As a National School of Arts alumni, Molefe later pursued a degree in music at the University of Cape Town.

Once he graduated, he moved back to Johannesburg and established himself as a composer, arranger and pianist in 2008. While he was established in 2008, he started writing compositions as a student who studied arranging and performance.

Molefe’s composition style is said to be derived from influences of traditional Zulu music, jazz and contemporary South African sounds. His playing is influenced by the likes of Bheki Mseleku and Themba Mkhize.

Organisers invite jazz fans to book for the event and bring along their own drinks and snacks – they provide ice and glasses.
