Can turmeric help prevent Alzheimer-linked organ damage?

A new study shows how turmeric extract may help prevent organ abnormalities commonly caused by Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, reports the World Health Organisation (WHO). If you have family members suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, you may want to add a good dose of turmeric to their diet.

While this debilitating disease is generally associated with the brain, due to the progressive deterioration in memory and cognitive ability, it also affects various other organs. This organ damage is often the contributing factor to Alzheimer-linked fatalities. Turmeric, however, may just be what the body needs to help protect those organs.

According to a recent study, the highly bioavailable curcuminoid and turmeric oil formulation, BCM-95, could very well prevent damage to various organs associated with Alzheimers. Results showed that BCM-95 helped reduce the degeneration of the spleen, inflammation in the kidney, lung and liver, and inflammation of the central hepatic vein in mice. A reduction in cell death and inflammatory markers in the brain was also discovered.

BCM-95 is backed by 83 clinical studies for its anti-inflammatory properties for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, diabetes and heart disease. It also received a US patent for potentially helping fight Alzheimer’s due to its enhanced absorption.
