DNA evidence leads to life sentence
DNA evidence links Vryheid rapist to 2023 attack, resulting in life imprisonment.
A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to raping a woman and robbing her and a male colleague in an attack that took place in Vryheid in 2023.
Guilty plea leads to life sentence
Lindokuhle Mkhwanazi was sentenced by the Vryheid Regional Court after pleading guilty today (Wednesday), in terms of Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Act, to one count of rape and two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the victims were on their way to work in April 2023 when they were confronted by three men armed with a firearm and knives. The attackers robbed the pair of their belongings before Mkhwanazi raped the female complainant. The three men then fled the scene.
Both victims were treated at hospital and reported the incident to police. As they did not know their attackers, no immediate arrests were made.
DNA evidence breaks the case
The case took a turn in 2025 when Mkhwanazi was arrested in connection with an unrelated matter. A DNA sample obtained during that investigation linked him to the rape.
During sentencing, prosecutor Kwazikwakhe Sibiya presented medical evidence and DNA results linking Mkhwanazi to the offence. The State also submitted victim impact statements, facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Bheki Hopewell Sithole.
The statements detailed the lasting emotional and psychological trauma suffered by both complainants. The female complainant also told the court she had experienced ridicule and ostracism within her community following the rape.
Court imposes effective life sentence
Mkhwanazi was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment on each of the two robbery counts and life imprisonment for rape. The sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective sentence of life imprisonment.
The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
NPA welcomes the outcome
Welcoming the sentence, NPA regional spokesperson for KwaZulu-Natal, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said tackling sexual offences and gender-based violence remains one of the authority’s priorities.
“Together with our partners in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, we remain committed to pursuing justice for victims and ensuring that perpetrators of these heinous crimes are held accountable,” said Ramkisson-Kara.
