#Throwback: 2006 fashion trends we just couldn’t live without

Take a nostalgic look at the biggest fashion trends that defined 2006, from low-rise jeans to statement belts and flip phones.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane, back to 2006, and revisit some of the most iconic fashion trends.

From low-rise flared jeans to those infamous pink flip phones to the now dreaded Ugg boots and capri ¾ pants, we’re looking back at all those fashion items we so proudly wore as daring teenagers, highly convinced that we were at the peak of fashion.

Whether you rocked those jeans or preferred camouflage cargo pants instead, no one can deny that 2006 gave us some unforgettable fashion trends and some questionable ones too…

We hope you have as much fun taking this nostalgic trip as we had compiling it…

1. Low-rise flared jeans:

These were an absolute essential! You didn’t dare wear skinny or high-waist jeans unless you were actively looking to be bullied.

2. Dresses over pants:

These were definitely one of those “What were we thinking?” fashion choices… I mean, why? Just why?

3. Ugg boots and mini denim skirts:

Nothing screamed comfort and fashion quite like a pair of knee-high Uggs paired with the perfect little mini denim skirt, a baby tee, and a cute little velvet zip-up tracksuit top.

4. Skinny scarves:

Again… Just why?? It wasn’t like they kept us warm at all. But they sure looked cute with most outfits.

5. Flip-flops:

Flip-flops just simply went with anything; whether it was a skirt, dress, jeans or capri pants, they just worked… We wouldn’t be caught dead wearing them in public today, but back then, comfort was key!

6. Cargo pants:

This was an absolute gem in the fashion industry, especially if you were an Avril or Pink fan! You just felt like the ultimate rebel in your very cute low-rise flared cargo pants, paired with a cute white or black tank top and, of course, your favourite flip-flops or skater boy-inspired sneakers.

7. Layering your tanks:

Once again, we get to a very questionable fashion choice here. We would wear a minimum of three tank tops at a time. Just three different colours, cuts and lengths, just for the sake of it. It was even better if at least one of them had lace trimmings…. I mean, electricity bills weren’t killing our parents back then, so we did not mind making the unnecessary extra washing for absolutely no reason at all.

8. Flip phones:

If you did not have a flip phone, then you were definitely not invited into the ‘cool kid club’. This was probably one of the biggest fashion accessories back in the day because every celebrity – from Britney Spears and Hillary Duff to Paris Hilton – had one.

9. Capri pants and crop tops:

This was one of my more favourite fashion items from the 2000s. It just screamed fashion and could be worn with practically any top and shoe. No matter what you paired it with, it just always worked.

10. Statement belts:

This was also a favourite fashion accessory… Belts were worn with anything and everything, from pants to skirts to dresses and even tracksuits. Don’t ask why we needed 500 belts to go with every piece of clothing we owned, because we just did and we loved it…

Time might have moved on and fashion has become a whole lot more daring, but one thing is for sure: the 2000s just hit differently.
